Every one out of 10 is jobless: Survey

ISLAMABAD, April 9th: One out of every 10 people of the country’s population has been added to the pool of the unemployed, as the unemployment rate further increased to 6.5%, showing signs of a crisis-plagued and slowing economy. The unemployment rate increased from 6% to 6.5% during the October-December period of 2012 – an increase of 8.4% over the same period of 2011, according to the latest Labour Force Survey for the second quarter of 2012-13. The survey was released on Monday by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics. In urban areas, the unemployment rate only increased by 2% to 10.1%. However, unemployment in rural areas increased to 5% from 4.3%, showing an increase of 16.3%. Labour force participation rate decreases in Q2

Tuesday, April 09, 2013 - Islamabad—Pakistan’s working-age population rate decreased during the second quarter October-December (2012-13) to 33.7 percent from 33.8 percent recorded during the same period of 2010-11, Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported. The labour force participation rate in men decreased from 50 percent in the second quarter of 2010-11 to 49.9 percent during the second quarter of the current year, according to Labour Force Survey 2012-13. Similarly, the working-age women population of the country decreased from 16.8 to 16.4, according to the survey. The data further revealed that the working-age population in rural areas increased from 35.3 percent to 35.6 percent while in urban areas it decreased from 30.9 percent to 30 percent. Study reveals over 50pc policewomen dissatisfied with job

PESHAWAR, Mar 28: Over 50 percent of policewomen are not happy with their job while 63 percent of the educated women in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan don’t want to join the police force. These were the finding of a study conducted by the Pakistan Society of Criminology (PSC). “It was found that 53 percent of the policewomen have experienced some kind of vulgar suggestions, sexual hints or sexual allurements from male co-workers,” disclosed the survey. The survey was conducted by asking questions of 103 policewomen in Balochistan Police serving from the rank of foot constables to deputy superintendent of police (DSP). Daily wagers without basic rights, facilities

LAHORE, Mar 11: Loaders working on daily wages in different city markets have been living and earning their livelihood under hard conditions, deprived of all fundamental rights particularly that of minimum wages fixed by the government, right to leave and medical assistance. A survey conducted by The News reveals that daily wages labourers and loaders in markets and factories are denied of other basic facilities which the employed labourers have been getting. The loaders and labourers community working in various city markets termed the government’s five-year tenure as a disaster for poor community especially for loaders as they have been getting Rs 6 only for carrying per grain sack weighing 60 Kg for past five years. High prevalence of respiratory illnesses in textile workers: study

KARACHI, Dec 27: A recent study shows a high prevalence of various respiratory illnesses and symptoms among textile workers in the city. The study titled ‘Pattern and predictors for respiratory illnesses, symptoms and lung functions among textile workers in Karachi’ was conducted by the Aga Khan University’s (AKU) department of community health sciences in collaboration with the University of Alabama’s School of Public Health. Published in an online foreign journal, the study is a cross-sectional survey of 372 adult men working in spinning and weaving sections of 15 textile mills in Karachi — one each from Korangi/Landhi industrial areas and North Karachi industrial area, two from Federal B.
