RAWALPINDI, June 18: Local government officials and labour unions on June 17 staged a protest against the federal budget and termed the announcement of 10 per cent increase in government employees’ salaries as peanuts. Over 150 people gathered in front of Liaquat Bagh on the call of National Labour Federation and chanted slogans against the government. They demanded an increase of at least 50 per cent in the salaries of government employees. The protesters were led by National Labour Federation President Shamsur Rehman Swati, while Ashiq Khan of Labour Unity of Iesco and Prem Union of Railways’ Zahoor Shah represented their organisations in the protest. Workers shut PTDC hotels
MANSEHRA, June 17: Employees have closed over 40 hotels of the Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation in Balakot and Naran tourist resorts to protest non-payment of salary for last 16 months. Talking to reporters in Balakot, PTDC employees’ union central president Majid Yaqoon said the hotels were closed on Friday. He said 400 employees had not been paid salaries. He alleged that PTDC managing director had inducted 1,100 men of his choice in the corporation. Mr Yaqoon said the employees had also held protest demonstrations last year against non-payment of salaries, but to no avail. He said the PTDC workers had to barrow money to meet daily home expenditures and children’s schooling. He said they would continue strike till their salaries were paid. Mine workers seek basic amenities
LAHORE, June 17: Mine workers of Khushab and Pind Dadan Khan are being deprived of basic amenities despite their major contribution to the national development in the mining sector comprising coal, salt, gypsum and limestone. This was stated by leaders of the mine workers union at a session held with MPAs to brief them about the miserable condition of mine workers in the province here on June 14. The meeting was organised by the Actionaid Pakistan. Union leaders called upon the government to circulate the proposed mining bill among all stakeholders to get their feedback and also review the bill prepared by the Actionaid Pakistan and consult it with workers.
