‘Manifestos depict anti-labour policies’

Karachi, May 2: The dominant thought among the ruling elite is that workers are charity seekers. Nearly all manifestos promise to raise wages, expand social security and facilitate employment generation but through privatisation. The state, it seems, aims to shun its responsibility towards labour welfare. On Labour Day, the Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research (Piler) said this in a press statement on May 1. “Today, Pakistan’s workers battle an indifferent state, the might of a deregulated and unregulated market system and an unaccountable employer. Labour rights, land reforms ignored by all parties: Piler

Karachi, April 29: After going through the election manifestos of all major political parties of the country, Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research (Piler) has declared that none of the parties has given adequate attention to labour issues and land reforms. The political parties have ignored workers and peasants while allocating party tickets for contesting polls. Enforcement of Factories Act, 1934 demanded

Karachi, April 1: Speakers at a consultation on “Workplace Health and Safety in Pakistan” on Mar 30 demanded implementation of labour laws including Factories Act, 1934 for the safety at workplaces in the country. The consultation, organised by the Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research (Piler) at a local hotel, demanded of the government to strictly implement the labour laws at all the workplaces in the country. Executive Director Piler Karamat Ali said that all the production should be made in a safe environment. “Unfortunately, this culture is not developed in Pakistan, but we need to develop such an environment, especially when we export products overseas. Factory fire: Piler deposits $750,000 in account of SHC nazir

KARACHI, March 27: The Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research (Piler) on March 26 deposited $750,000 in the account of the Sindh High Court nazir on a directive of the SHC commission headed by retired Justice Rahmat Hussain Jafery for distribution among families of the victims of Ali Enterprises. Piler received the amount from the German garments buyer, KiK Textilien, after it had signed an agreement with the buyer to compensate in cash those affected families who have still not received any compensation from the government or any other source. Piler through an application had requested the SHC to form a commission for the payment of compensation to the affected families. ‘German firm to pay $1m for Baldia factory fire victims’

KARACHI, Jan 7: A major European buyer of textile products of the ill-fated Ali Enterprises, a factory in Baldia Town that was burnt down in an inferno a few months ago, has agreed to pay up to a total of $1 million as a compensation to the victims of the worst industrial disaster in the country, said labour leaders on Jan 5. Speaking at a press conference organised by the Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research (Piler) at the Karachi Press Club, they said various labour organisations working with the victims would now approach the Sindh High Court to urge it to form a commission, comprising representatives of the workers and the government, to identify the victims and their legal heirs who could be paid compensation.
