LAHORE, Sep 2: The Young Doctors Association, Punjab, got on Aug 31 positive signals from the health authorities on restoration of the 199 paid house job posts and implementation of service structure.
The development came when a YDA delegation called on Health Secretary Hassan Iqbal at his office on this particular issue.
The YDA, however, announced continuing with agitation till the issuance of a notification in this regard.
Headed by YDA President Dr Javed Aheer, the delegation consisted of Dr Amir Bandesha, Dr Ahmad Kharl, Dr Shabbir Chaudhry and Dr Usman. Health Special Secretary Babar Hayyat Tarar, Additional Secretary (Admin) Azmat Mahmood and Additional Secretary (Establishment) Dr Muhammad Khan Ranjha were also present on the occasion.
The meeting discussed the issue point-wise. “We have received positive signals for the first time in the meeting since the launch of fresh agitation,” YDA spokesman Dr Khurram Shahzad told Dawn.
He said the health officials showed seriousness in resolving the demands of the protesting young doctors.
He said the health secretary informed the YDA delegation that his department had finalised work for the restoration of all the abolished 199 paid house job positions within a couple of days.
“The health secretary further informed that a cell established at Punjab Directorate of Health Services was preparing seniority lists by promoting all the doctors to next grade,” Dr Khurram said.
The health department has also removed objections raised by the regulations department to seniority matters.
He said the health secretary assured the YDA team that the process for updating the seniority lists would be finalised within next two weeks.
After that the medical officers would get prompt promotions to next grades, the YDA spokesman said while quoting Hassan Iqbal.
He said participants in the meeting also constituted a committee to review the seniority issues of doctors. Dr Khurram, however, made it clear that the young doctors would continue with protests according to the schedule given by the YDA leadership till the issuance of the notification.
Earlier, the young doctors observed a strike at the OPD of the LGH and also took out a rally on Ferozepur Road for the acceptance of their demands.
A lady doctor fainted on the road during the YDA protest. She was immediately shifted to the LGH emergency where doctors provided her with initial treatment. She was stated to be stable.
The doctors raised slogans in favour of their demands, including restoration of the slashed positions.
The YDA spokesman said the next phase of the protest would start from tomorrow (Sep 2).
