RAWALPINDI, Nov 14: More than 1,000 sanitation workers and local government employees gathered at Murree Road near Committee Chowk and blocked the main artery for more than two hours.
The protesters were chanting slogans against the government and the local police who failed to provide protection to the sanitation workers.
Later, Commissioner Talat Mehmood Gondal and Regional Police Officer Wisal Fakhar Sultan Raja held meeting with the leaders of the union and assured them that the sanitation workers would be provided protection in future.
They informed the participants of the rally that the provincial government would provide Rs1.8 million to each family of the deceased, besides providing them one year’s salary.
The protesters blocked Murree Road by burning tyres, compounding the road users’ problems, who were already bearing the brunt of dharna of religious parties at Faizabad interchange.
All the traffic was diverted to Rawal Road which was already chocked due to the traffic coming from airport and adjoining areas. The patients towards Benazir Bhutto Hospital also faced problem in reaching the hospital in the morning.
The families of the victims were also present on the occasion and alleged that the local police were deliberately not solving the murder cases.
On the other hand, Regional Police Officer Wisal Fakhar Sultan Raja directed the City Police Officer Israr Ahmed Abbasi, SSP Investigation Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi to increase the patrolling of Dolphin Force and deployment of local police in the pickets.
He directed the police to trace the murderers without any further delay otherwise stern action would be taken against the investigators.
He also directed the police to involve Counter -Terrorism Department in the investigations.
All Pakistan Municipal Workers and Local government employees Association Punjab Chapter Chairman Ghulam Ahmed Naz told Dawn that the government would provide financial help to the families.
He said that sanitation workers were the easy target of the killers in Rawalpindi as in the last six months five workers had been killed.
He said the police had failed to maintain law and order situation in the city areas and it created panic in the area.
Two gunmen on Saturday morning killed two sanitation workers in Nishter Street of Sadiqabad and wounding another critically.
Unidentified shooters had earlier murdered two workers of Albayrak and injuring three others in two separate attacks in the Sadiqabad Police area.
On June 3Ashir Asif son of Asif Masih was attacked and killed by two shooters near Chandni Chowk.
Similarly, Karamat Masih was shot dead at Data Ganj Baksh Road.
